FIRST DAY OF FOREVER

Sha’re’s dead.

The last thing I expected when we followed Daniel from that purple candy floss tree planet was to walk in on his ultimate heartbreak.

Dropping to my knees, I lay a hand on his shoulder, turning him onto his back. “How ya doin,’ Daniel?” Shit. Talk about your stupid questions.

His eyes track slowly across the ceiling of the tent, seeking the source of the inquiry. There’s pain there, physical and emotional. The look swiftly transitions to puzzlement, his brows pulling together, when his eyes meet mine.

“Take it easy, buddy. We’ll get you both home. I promise.”

*****

Sha’re’s dead.

I ran through the Stargate on that strange, ‘candyfloss pink’ treed planet and walked right into my ultimate heartbreak.

Jack drops to his knees beside me and lays a hand on my shoulder, turning me to my back.

“Daniel?”

His voice is soft with compassion. My eyes track slowly across the ceiling of the tent, finding his.

They project the same remorse I feel. We’ve never acted on the love we’ve confessed to each other, but somehow that does not absolve us of guilt.

My regret transitions to puzzlement. Has my wife paid the price for my betrayal?

The End
