SIGNS OF LIFE

He’s happy. A light, nearly snuffed by isolation and sadness, rekindled in one of his favorite activities.

We came so close to losing him. And after I’d just gotten him back.

“Sir, it’s time to go,” Sam calls.

Surrounded by his eager students, Jack looks up from his makeshift hockey stick. He shoots a half-hearted sneer at Sam then turns to me, the most glorious smile illuminating him.

He’d lost his way on Edora, his spirit so damaged that the illness he brought back with him nearly killed him.

But now he’s whole again. The signs of life are indisputable.
